It's an excellent question, and it depends on what you intend to do with the pieces once they are painted.
The MegaChess Plastic Giant Chess Sets are made of HDPE. The material is excellent for the set's durability and ability to take significant abuse without damaging the pieces. The way it does that, is there is a slight "give" to the chess piece on impact.
That "give" protects the chess piece but makes painting the pieces a challenge. The "give" will eventually allow the paint to separate from the pieces, making them chip. So if you plan on using the pieces to play chess, the answer is no. You should not paint the pieces.
However, many of our customer's use the chess pieces as decor. If you intend to use the pieces as decor, yes, you can paint the pieces, but be prepared to put in some effort. Here are the steps we recommend:
1. Heat the surface you intend to paint with a blow torch and let the pieces cool. Be careful not to melt the pieces - just a light pass over with the flame.
2. Sand the surfaces with high grit sandpaper.
3. Clean the chess pieces thoroughly.
4. Apply a primer that works with plastic.
5. Apply the final coat with paint designed for plastic.
Enjoy your newly painted chess pieces!
